Cowgirls Complete Qualifying Play at ITA Regional Tournament
October 27, 2003 | Cowgirl Tennis
Every participating Cowgirl was able to advance through the first round of competition unscathed.
In the round of 64, junior Ines Furtmayr started things off by overcoming an early 3-0 deficit to defeat Karen Kmiec of Northern Arizona, 7-6, 6-1.
Freshman Lauren Simmons followed suit by defeating NAU's Ashley Dille in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Sophomore Zana Masnic ended the Cowgirls first round by dropping Megan Bjorkman of Boise State, 6-3, 6-4.
In the second round, Furtmayr fought back from losing the first set to defeat Erika Josbena of Missouri, 1-6, 7-6, 10-1.
“I am very happy about the progression of Ines,” Head Coach Lubicz-Majewski said. “She has been sick and out of practice for the last 2 weeks and she started out slow at this tournament. But when it came time for it, she always came up with the big win.”
The Cowgirls first loss on the day came when Simmons fell to Oklahoma's Amanda Pratzel in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Masnic also fell in the second round, 7-5, 6-3, to Michelle Heidbrink of New Mexico.
“Both of the girls tried very hard,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “They were fairly close matches and we just didn't go through with the plan.”
In the third round, Furtmayr notched her third victory of the day by posting a 6-4, 6-3, victory over OU's Joi Lee Beaschler.
“Too be honest, I am a little dissappointed,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “I thought that we would be able to advance two players to the main draw. There are a lot of good players here. We have a lot of new players, but the matches were tough. We were all hungry to win.”
The Cowgirls will return to action tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. at the Eccols Tennic Center with the main draw as well as the doubles matches.
