Cowgirl Netters Eliminated at ITA Regional Tournament
October 27, 2003 | Cowgirl Tennis
The lone victory on the day came when the senior tandem of Katya Kolodynska and Jana Karaskova defeated Kindsey Grimes and Lisette Pereira of Tulsa, 8-6.
The duo was dropped in the next round by Oklahoma's second seeded Andu Perianu and Heather Saluri by a score of 8-4.
“Our doubles team has been playing OK,” Head Coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski said. “I do not feel that they have reached that top level of competition yet. They were unseeded and had never played with each other before this year and have done well to get this far.”
In singles play, all three Cowgirls were eliminated in the consolation bracket.
Junior Ines Furtmayr started things off for the Cowgirls falling to Wendi Websters of Wichita State in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.
Karaskova was dropped in a tightly contested match against Donata Majauskaite of Tulsa, 7-6, 3-6, 10-8.
“Jana had a very good match,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “I felt that her concentration was thrown off by a questionable call and she was not able to overcome it. She just completely lost concentration in the tie-breaker for the match.”
Kolodynska was unable to hold on for the victory after claiming the first set, falling by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 12-10, to A Dybicz of Arkansas.
The finish of the tournament marked the finale of the lady netters' fall season. The Cowgirls will return to play in January when they attempt to repeat as Big 12 Champions.
“I do not think that we played to the level that we should have,” Lubicz-Majewski said. “We worked very hard to get here and I thought that our team would have played better. Hopefully we will turn it up and compete hard in the spring.”
