Cowgirl Soccer Prepares For Bedlam
October 24, 2003 | Cowgirl Soccer
Oklahoma State's soccer team will be looking for its first win since October 5 when Oklahoma rolls into town for Bedlam on Monday. Since that time the Cowgirls have lost to Iowa State, Nebraska and Colorado and tied Missouri. Currently the Cowgirls are seventh in the conference standings, one-half game behind Oklahoma, with two league games remaining. OSU closes out the home portion of its conference schedule on Monday, hosting Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in its only non-weekend game of the season. Oklahoma State leads the series with Oklahoma 6-1-0. OU's only win against the Cowgirls was a 2-1 overtime decision in Norman in 2001.
Scouting Oklahoma
Oklahoma enters the weekend at 8-4-4 overall and 3-2-3 in league contests. The Sooners will visit Lawrence on Friday to face the Jayhawks before taking on the Cowgirls on Monday. Five of OU's six conference games in October have gone into overtime, including four double overtime battles. The Sooners clenched a spot in the Big 12 Tournament following a win against Texas Tech and a tie with Baylor last weekend. Logan Womack leads the Sooners with 16 points on six goals and four assists. Also chipping in are Lauren MacIver (4 goals, 5 assists), Becky Nelson (5 goals, 2 assists) and Savannah Scott (4 goals, 3 assists). Catherine Wade has earned all of OU's decisions in goal, netting four shutouts and 124 saves on a 1.32 goals-against average.
A Look Back At Bedlam 2002
With postseason hopes on the line, Oklahoma State mounted a furious comeback, scoring three goals in the final six minutes of the contest to erase a 2-0 deficit. All three goals came from an unlikely source, defender Jeni Jackson. Entering the contest Jackson had not scored a single career goal, but she came through big in a big way, notching the first hat trick by a Cowgirl since Robin Rampey in 1996 and sending the Cowgirls to the Big 12 Tournament for the first time in program history.
Head Coach Karen Hancock
Karen Hancock is in her eighth year at Oklahoma State, having started the program in 1996. In seven years at OSU, Hancock holds a 67-72-10 record and the program has grown stronger each year. Hancock has led the team to a 10-0 start the past two seasons. Last year's squad finished 13-7-0 to set a school record for wins in a season. Hancock's hard work paid off when the Cowgirls qualified for the Big 12 Tournament for the first time and she earned Co-Big 12 Coach of the Year honors.
Home Sweet Home
Oklahoma State has not lost at home this year. The Cowgirls are 6-0-1 with the tie coming against then-No. 3 Texas A&M. Dating back to last season the Cowgirls are a combined 14-2-1 at Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Last year's losses came to a pair of Top 25 opponents, Texas and Texas A&M. The Cowgirls have two home games remaining on the schedule, Oklahoma on October 27 and Arkansas on November 2.
Dominating the Opposition
In addition to posting an impressive 11-3-2 record, OSU has dominated its opponents on the field. The Cowgirls have outscored their opponents 56-12, including seven contests won by four or more. The Cowgirls have outshot the opposition 319-171 and hold a 172-74 shots on goal advantage. OSU has another lopsided advantage in corner kicks, taking 125 to its opponents 53.
