KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Oklahoma State's softball team went 2-1 on the first day at the Fifth Annual Fall Classic Tournament in Kansas City. Power-hitting was the key to the day as the game-winning hit in all three contests was a home run.
The opening game was the Lauren Bay show, as she threw a no-hitter from the mound and had the game winning hit in the bottom of the seventh.
In seven innings of work, Bay struck out nine Creighton batters, then completed the game with a solo home run in the final frame to lift the Cowgirls to victory, 1-0.
The second game against Washburn was eerily similar to the first, but this time Oklahoma State came out on the wrong end of the 1-0 score.
Sarah Seagraves gave up four hits from the circle, but it was one batter in the bottom of the third that made the difference.
With one out, Brooke Lyone sent a shot over the fence and Washburn hung on to the one run lead for the remainder of the game.
Not happy with the loss, the Cowgirls came out with a vengeance for the final game of the day, defeating Johnson County, 9-1, in five innings.
After OSU put one run on the board in the top of the first, Afton Burris continued the home run trend, sending one long in the fourth for the go-ahead run.
The Cowgirls then exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth to earn the run-rule win. Ryan Realmuto started the inning with a solo long ball and with the bases loaded Stephanie Nicholson had a triple to bring in three runs.
Nicholson did not have to wait long to cross home plate, as Calli Behmer followed with a double. Behmer was also quick to come home when Realmuto collected a double on her second plate appearance of the inning. Burris then rounded out the scoring with a single to send in the final run of the game.
Oklahoma State will conclude pool play tomorrow at 11 a.m. If the Cowgirls win, they will play for the championship at 3 p.m., if they lose they will play in the third place game at 1 p.m.
