STILLATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's soccer squad jumped out the best start in program history, improving to 5-0 Thursday night before 430 fans at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls defeated Western Kentucky, 4-1, to remain unbeaten at home.
Defense was the key to start the game, as neither team took a shot for the first 25 minutes.
Courtney Robb broke the standstill and jump-started the Cowgirls with a goal at the 25:29 mark. Jeni Jackson booted the ball to Robb from midfield and when WSU goalkeeper Amy Uhlman came out to challenge the forward, she evaded the keeper for the goal.
The offense continued to roll as Jolene Schweitzer scored her fourth goal of the season exactly one minute later on an assist from Nikki Wojtowicz.
With just over 11 minutes to go in the half, Krista Dedmon took a cross from Schweitzer and sent a shot to left corner of the goal. It looked as if the attempt would fall short, but the ball managed to dribble over the goal line and give the Cowgirls a 3-0 lead at the half.
Oklahoma State held the Lady Toppers to one shot in the first period, giving up the lone effort with 45 seconds remaining.
Western Kentucky refused to go quietly and avoided the shutout with a goal at the 75:18 mark.
Jere Boykin extended the lead to three once again, finding the back of the net five minutes later. Wojtowicz picked up her second assist of the night, feeding the ball to Boykin on the right side for the goal and final margin.
The Cowgirls have outshot their opponents in each of their games and taken three times as many shots (81) as they have allowed (27).
Not only is Oklahoma State's 5-0 record the best start for a Cowgirl squad, it is also the longest winning streak for the program. Previously the Cowgirls had a four-game streak, with the most recent occurrence in the 1998 season, from Sept. 18-Sept. 27.
Oklahoma State (5-0) will have a few days to rest before hitting the road. The Cowgirls will take on the Arkansas Lady 'Backs on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Fayetteville, Ark.
