STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team opened the fall season with a win Tuesday over Carl Albert State College, 9-5.
Carl Albert State led 5-2 at the end of six innings after capitalizing on two straight OSU errors and a walk. With the bases loaded, the next two batters came up big, producing base hits, scoring runs and taking over the momentum.
Oklahoma State escaped further damage in the inning, forcing the final out and causing the visitors to leave two runners stranded.
After the sixth inning explosion, the OSU defense turned it up a notch, allowing three hits and keeping the visitors off the scoreboard for the final six innings of play.
Oklahoma State made a late charge, pulling within one in the bottom of the eighth and plating the equalizing run in the ninth.
With the bases loaded in the ninth, Oklahoma State took advantage of two hits and an error by CASC. Brooke Siebel evened the game at 5-5, sending a double deep into the outfield to bring home Ashleigh Tweed and Megan Carey.
The eleventh proved to be a big inning for the Cowgirls, as four crossed the plate on five hits. The offensive firepower in the inning was provided by the bottom of the lineup. Four Cowgirls; Stephanie Nicholson, Siebel, Heather Been, and Erika Ennis, had consecutive singles.
After a fly ball to center field, power-hitter Ryan Realmuto fired a base hit just past the infield to bring in the final run of the game.
The Cowgirls showed their depth on the mound, using four pitchers in the contest. Lauren Bay earned the start, striking out five in the first three innings. Cami Carter followed in relief, throwing the next three innings and giving up five runs.
Brooke Siebel made her debut on the mound, throwing three innings and striking out five. Sarah Seagraves also saw her first action in the circle as a Cowgirl. Seagraves struck out six batters in the final three innings to pick up the win.
Oklahoma State continues the fall season on Thursday at 3 p.m., hosting Seminole Junior College at Cowgirl Stadium. Admission is free to the public.
