Looking Ahead
Oklahoma State's soccer team opens the regular season this weekend with a pair of games at the AT&T Wireless Oklahoma Shootout in Tulsa. The Cowgirls will take on in-state rivals Oral Roberts and Tulsa at the ORU Soccer Complex. OSU will face ORU on Friday at 8 p.m. and Tulsa at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The Cowgirls are 4-2 overall in season openers and 0-2 on the road. OSU is on a two-game winning streak in season openers after defeating East Central, 3-1, in Stillwater last year. In 2000, Oklahoma State met ORU in the opener and shut out the Golden Eagles, 1-0.
ORU defeated the Cowgirls, 1-0, in Edmond last year to even the series at 2-2-0. The Golden Eagles posted an 11-8-1 record last year and finished third in the Mid-Continent standings. ORU returns nine starters and 16 letterwinners from last year's squad.
ORU defeated East Central, 5-0, in exhibition action in Tulsa. Erin Hartog led the charge against the Tigers, registering two goals and one assist in the contest.
Tulsa leads the series with Oklahoma State, 2-0-0. The Golden Hurricane have shut out the Cowgirls in both meetings, winning 5-0 in 2000 and 1-0 in 2001. Tulsa compiled a 9-9-2 record in 2001 and finished fifth in the WAC standings. Tulsa returns nine starters and 13 letterwinners for the 2002 season.
Tulsa lost to Ole Miss, 2-0, in its exhibition game at Oxford, Mississippi. The Rebels outshot the Golden Eagles, 22-6.
Preseason in Review
The Cowgirls traveled to Missouri for an exhibition match-up with Southwest Missouri State on Sunday and emerged victorious, 3-1.
OSU's Kim Graves found the back of the net on an assist from Nikki Wojtowicz at the 30:37 mark to give the Cowgirls the early advantage. The Cowgirls took a 2-0 cushion into the locker room when Jolene Schweitzer scored at the 40:28 mark on an assist from Krista Dedmon.
SMS's Katie DeCarlo cut the lead in half with a goal in the 72nd minute, but the Cowgirl defense stepped up and allowed just two shots for the remainder of the contest.
Jere Boykin gave the Cowgirls some breathing room when she added the final goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining. Kat Doud and Jackie Hinton shared time in goal for the Cowgirls, with Hinton surrendering the goal in the second period.
Oklahoma State spent 10 days training in Spain in early August. The 19 returnees from the 2001 squad made the trip across the Atlantic to test their skills against international competition.
The Cowgirls fared well on their preseason tour, ending with a 3-0 record and outscoring their opponents 10-1.
Jolene Schweitzer scored both goals and led the Cowgirls to victory in game one against the Malaga Women's Football Club, 2-0.
The Cowgirl offense was on fire in game two, blistering the back of the net five times. Jere Boykin, Krista Dedmon, Jolene Schweitzer, Kim Graves and Joanne Edwards all registered goals in the contest with the Seville Women's Football Club. The defense gave up its only goal of the trip against Seville and OSU emerged with the win, 5-1.
Oklahoma State earned its second shutout in three games against the Andalucia Under 23 Regional team. Once again, the offensive duties were shared as three different Cowgirls scored in the contest. Schweitzer was the first to strike and Edwards followed less than one minute later to end the first half.
Leah Carr provided the final goal eight minutes into the second half and the Cowgirls took the win, 3-0.
Foot Notes
-After leading the team with 20 points as a freshman, sophomore forward Jolene Schweitzer looks ready for another year of success on the field. Schweitzer was dominant in the Cowgirls four preseason games, pacing the team with five goals and three assists.
- Oklahoma State returns all but one starter from the 2001 squad that posted a 8-10-1 record, the best finish for the program since a 9-9-1 mark in 1997.
-The Cowgirls used senior Kat Doud for all 1800 minutes in goal last year, but have a roster loaded with goalkeepers for 2002. Among, the newcomers is freshman Jackie Hinton who played the second half of the Cowgirls exhibition game in Missouri.
