Oklahoma State Drops Southern 20-11

STILLWATER, Okla. - First baseman Zach Cates went 3-for-4 with six RBIs, including a grand slam home run in the fourth inning to lead Oklahoma State to a wild 20-11 win over Southern University in baseball action Monday night at Reynolds Stadium.
Both teams put on an offensive display with 27 hits and 31 runs in the contest. The loss snapped the Jaguars 13-game win streak and dropped them to 45-7 on the year while the Cowboys improved to 35-17.
Jeff Salazar led off the first with a solo homer to right-center for the Pokes, his fourth of the year. After Nebasett Brown walked and Daylon Monette doubled, Cates singled them home to extend the lead to 3-0.
Southern rallied for two runs in the top of the third, the first coming on a RBI single by second baseman Rickie Weeks. The sophomore sensation finished the night 4-for-6 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored.
OSU added a run in the bottom of the third before the Jaguars stormed back with six runs in the fourth to take an 8-4 lead. The Cowboys responded with seven runs of their own, four coming off of the grand slam by Cates, to make it 11-8.
Southern chipped away at the lead, scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie the game at 11-11.
Oklahoma State then broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth with five runs in the stanza, two coming via a double by Jose Virgil. The Pokes scored four more runs in the seventh with Virgil again coming up with the big hit, a three-run double to give him five RBIs on the night.
Reliever Daniel Rew limited the Jaguars to just two hits in four innings of work with four strikeouts to improve to 3-0 on the year. Jason Anderson (1-3) walked four and gave up two runs in relief to take the loss for Southern.
Outfielder Theo Dumas went 2-for-5 with two runs scored to help lead the Jaguar attack while Salazar, Virgil, and Jason Jaramillo all had two hits to pave the way for OSU.
The teams will wrap up the two-game set tomorrow at 3 p.m. The contest is free to the public.
