Cowgirls Down Missouri in Big 12 Tennis

Oklahoma State went unbeaten through singles play Thursday afternoon as the Cowgirls upended Missouri 4-1 in the first round of the Big 12 Women's Tennis Championships at Texas A&M.
The Cowgirls, 12-10 on the season, will move into a quarterfinal match against fourth-seeded Baylor, Friday at 1 p.m.
OSU eliminated Missouri with strong singles play, including a 6-2, 6-1 win by 96th-ranked Linda Faltynkova over Katka Jevcikova. The Cowgirls also got singles wins by Kate Vasylyeva, Katia Kolodynska and Ines Furtmayr.
Singles matches at No. 1 and No. 6 were not completed.
In doubles play, Oklahoma State got a strong performance from its 12th-ranked No. 1 team of Faltynkova and Kolodynska who defeated Missouri's Jevcikova and Juric, 8-5. Missouri claimed wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cowgirls.
"We lost at midseason to Missouri, so I think it was really personal to the girls today," said OSU head coach Julius Lubicz-Majewski. "We are upset that we didn't win doubles but we're still dealing with some injuries. Now we have to get ready for Baylor on Friday."
Missouri coach Blake Starkey said it was good to get the doubles point but the Cowgirls were too much in singles' play. "We took the doubles point from Oklahoma State, but give them credit. They are a great team and came out in singles on fire."
The Big 12 Tennis Championships are being held at the Texas A&M Tennis Center. OSU's men's squad is set to open the tournament Friday afternoon against Texas Tech.
