Oklahoma State's equestrian team will look to add to its team titles this year as it travels to Gainesville, Fla., on April 20 to compete at the Varsity Championships.
"The girls are very excited on how they performed at zones and want to carry that momentum into the Varsity Championships," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "We have a tremedous amount of talent on the team and we just need to be sure everything comes together on the day that we are performing."
OSU is coming off the Zone Seven Championships where the Western team qualified for the IHSA National Championships after placing ahead of New Mexico State. The Hunter team earned the automatic berth to nationals after winning the Regional Championships. They went on to become the 2002 Zone Seven Champions after defeating Colorado State, 50-46.
"This Varsity Championships is a team competition," Sanchez said. All the girls scores count in the Hunter and Western division and then they combine those scores and have an overall team champion."
At the Zone Championships, junior Emily Hoaglan fueled the Cowgirls to their first Zone Championship after winning her first individual zone championship title. The Ft. Gibson, Okla., native won her last two shows of the regular season to qualify for regionals.
Hoaglan then went on to win regionals to qualify for zones and is the lone Cowgirl to qualify individually for nationals.
In the race to zone champions on the Western side, Texas A&M edged out OSU, 29-28, to give the Aggies their second zone championship title.
The Cowgirls won three-straight disciplines to take a 23-22 lead heading into the final division, but fell short after Texas A&M's Quincy Cahill edged out Kayla Elmenhorst to give the Aggies the victory.
OSU will return to action on May 2-5 as they compete at the IHSA National Championships at Cazenovia College in Cazenovia, N.Y.
