STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team split with No. 24 Texas A&M Sunday in conference play. Two home runs in the first game propelled the Cowgirls to victory, 3-2, while A&M won game two, 2-1, scoring the winning run on a two-run dinger.
In game one, OSU jumped on top, 2-0, in the bottom of the second. Ryan Realmuto led off the inning with a walk and Megan Carey hit her fifth long ball of the year to give the Cowgirls the early advantage.
A&M's Kelly Furguson cut the margin to one in the top of the fourth, sending a RBI single to center field and bringing Adrian Gregory home.
The Aggies tied things up in the top of the sixth when Lindsey Wilhelmson doubled down the right field line, but the Cowgirls quickly regained the lead.
Jenny Kipp provided the winning run for OSU, leading off the bottom of the frame with a solo shot over the left field fence, her fifth of the year.
With the win, Lauren Bay improved to 17-8 on the year. The left-hander struck out seven batters, walked three and allowed four hits. A&M's Jessica Slataper fell to 16-7, recording 10 strikeouts, three walks and giving up two hits in the game.
In the second game of the doubleheader, neither team was able to put runs on the board until the fifth inning.
Kipp got the ball rolling, leading off the inning with a double to a gaping hole in left center. Casey O'Neill moved Kipp to third with a sacrifice bunt, her 15th of the season. Stephanie Hodges followed with a single just over the second baseman's head and punched in Kipp, to account for OSU's only run of the game.
The Aggies proved to have the hot hand in game two, taking their turn with the long ball in the top of the sixth. With two down, Selena Collins sent a two-run dinger over the left field fence to give the Aggies the win.
Cami Carter (9-7) went the distance for OSU, striking out three, walking one and allowing six hits. Lindsey Wilhelmson (9-4) picked up the win for the Aggies, fanning three batters, walking three and giving up four hits.
"We have to come up with more timely hits," said Head Coach Margaret Rebenar. "It takes big hits to win big games."
After the series, Oklahoma State is 26-15 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12, while Texas A&M is 33-11 overall and 6-6 in the Big 12.
The Cowgirls return to action Tuesday, April 16, when they take part in the Oklahoma Farm Bureau Softball Challenge at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. OSU will square off with No.1 Arizona at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and 12th-ranked Fresno State on Wednesday, April 17 at 5:30 p.m.
