STILLWATER, Okla. - Josh Fields' RBI single in the sixth inning keyed a three-run Oklahoma State rally as the Cowboys defeated Kansas, 12-5, in Big 12 baseball action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
OSU trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth when first baseman Zach Cates opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by shortstop Rob Watson. Centerfielder Jeff Salazar then knocked in Cates on a single through the right side to tie the game at 5-5. After Salazar advanced to second on a wild pitch, pinch hitter Josh Fields put the Pokes ahead with a RBI single to left. Nebasett Brown's squeeze bunt single plated Salazar from third to finish out the Cowboy scoring in the sixth.
The Pokes added five runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach. Fields had a two-run single and leftfielder Jose Virgil had a three-run double to account for the Oklahoma State runs in the stanza.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the first when Daylon Monette knocked a double to left-center, scoring Nebasett Brown who had reached on a base hit. Zach Cates made it 2-0 in the second when he blasted a solo homer to right field, his second of the season.
Kansas cut into the lead in the fourth, scoring a run off a RBI single by first baseman Kevin Wheeler. The Cowboys got the run right back in their half of the inning when Paul Powell led off with a solo homer over the left field wall and into the Cowgirl Softball Stadium. Catcher Jason Jaramillo added a RBI single to make it 4-1 after four.
The Jayhawks stormed back to score four runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. KU scored two runs off of Cowboy starter Scott Baker and then took the lead on a two-run homer by first baseman Kevin Wheeler off of reliever Jimmy Rhodes.
Rhodes bounced back to pitch 4.2 innings to pick up the win to even his record at 2-2 on the year. He gave up seven hits and the two runs while striking out two.
Oklahoma State won its fourth straight game and improved to 19-7 overall and 5-3 in Big 12 play while KU drops to 12-11 and 1-7 in conference play.
The teams will be close out the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Junior Chris Reilly is scheduled to take the mound for OSU, while right hander Jake Wright is slated to start for Kansas.
