Cowboys Defeat Memphis 9-3

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State used 12 hits and solid relief pitching to defeat Memphis, 9-3, in baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
Leftfielder Jos? Virgil led the Cowboys offensively with a 3-for-3 day at the plate that included a homer and a double.
Reliever Joe Weaver (2-1) picked up his second win of the year in relief of starter Mike Miller who pitched into the fifth inning. Weaver pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief and struck out two.
Memphis opened the scoring in the first on a solo homer by shortstop Brent Dlugach to take a 1-0 lead. OSU scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning and added another in the second for a 3-1 advantage.
The Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 in the third, but Oklahoma State responded in the fourth when centerfielder Jeff Salazar opened the stanza with a triple to the right field corner and then scored on a passed ball to push the Cowboy lead to 4-2.
Memphis designated hitter Barrett Smith homered off of Miller in the fifth to slice the OSU lead to 4-3. Cowboy shortstop Rob Watson responded in the bottom of the stanza with a three-run homer that put Oklahoma State on front 7-3.
The Pokes scored another run in the sixth and Virgil closed out the scoring in the eighth with a solo homer, his fifth of the season.
The Cowboys improved to 17-7 with the win while the Tigers fell to 5-14. Oklahoma State will be back in action this weekend as Kansas comes to town for a three-game Big 12 series. The teams will open up with a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday.
