Softball Splits In Day One Of Worth Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - Oklahoma State's softball team split in its first day of action here Friday in the Worth Invitational. The Cowgirls lost to Minnesota, 4-3, in game one and defeated sixth-ranked California, 1-0, in the second game.
In game one, Minnesota struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third. Hailee Nanchy hit a solo home run and Tammi Hays later crossed the plate on one of six Cowgirl errors to give the Golden Gophers a 2-0 advantage.
The Cowgirl bats were silent until the fourth inning when Lauren Bay led off the inning with a home run to pull OSU within one.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Cowgirls took a 3-2 lead on a double by Jenny Kipp to score Teresa Ritchie and Erika Ennis.
The Cowgirl advantage was short-lived, as Minnesota scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a Jordan Nygren double to give the Golden Gophers the final 4-3 margin.
Cami Carter (3-2) took the loss on the mound, striking out two and allowing eight hits.
In the nightcap, OSU upset sixth-ranked California with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Casey O'Neill hit a double to get in scoring position. Bay came up big for the Cowgirls once again, hitting a double to bring O'Neill home for the winning run.
On the mound, Bay (7-1) struck out five and gave up four hits en route to her second shutout of the season.
The Cowgirls (10-2) will face stiff competition on day two in Fullerton. OSU will square off with no. 10 Pacific at 6 p.m. and 11th-ranked Oregon State at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
