Oklahoma State's women's equestrian team jumped out to a five-point advantage in the team race after scoring a season-high 31 points Sunday at the Animal Science Arena.
"We're glad we're finally in the lead," head coach Larry Sanchez. "We like being in the lead, but by no means are we going to let our guard down. We need to make sure that we have as a good a show, if not better, the last two shows of the season."
The Cowgirls were fueled by freshmen Cheryl Adamson, Maggie Engles, Lindsay Childress and Amy Scott, each capturing victories in their respective classes.
Adamson recorded her second-straight victory in Beginner, boosting her season point total to 28, seven away from qualifying for regionals with two shows remaining. Engles and Childress recorded their second victory of the year in Advanced 1 and 2, respectively.
Scott entered the show with 21 points, six away from qualifying for regionals. With Scott's victory in Reining she amassed the points needed to qualify for regionals.
"We need to make sure we keep up the intensity that we've had," Sanchez said. "And I think the girls are going to come into the last two shows with a better attitude than they already have."
With its 31-point day, OSU stormed to a five point lead to claim the top spot in the region in Western with 123 points. Texas A&M recorded two victories to capture 25 points to boost its season total to 118 points.
West Texas A&M and Kansas State round out the top four with 102 and 99 points, respectively.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Feb. 16-17 with a pair of Hunt Seat shows at Texas A&M before finishing the western regular season out at West Texas A&M on Feb. 23-24.
