STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Western team qualified two for regionals this weekend. The Cowgirls hosted two shows at the Animal Science Arena on Saturday and Sunday.
"I am proud of the team as a coach. They not only had the worry of putting on the horse show but also competing at the best of their ability and I feel that they juggled that very well." said head coach Larry Sanchez.
On Saturday the Cowgirls finished third overall with 14 points. They finished behind winner Texas A&M, who had 26 points, and West Texas A&M who had 20 points.
Several Cowgirls won their event on Saturday. Sophomore Mandy McNally won first place in Intermediate II A. The Guthrie, Okla., native finished just ahead of senior teammate Natalie Hoefler who finished second.
In Intermediate II B freshman Nicole Stec took home top honors. Sophomore April Peck took first place in Intermediate I and Luann Ulrich won in Advanced I A. Sophomore Laura Brawdy and freshman Stephanie Rollins both finished second in Beginner B and Advanced II, respectively.
"We expected them to step up and ride and they did. All you can expect is for them to come in and give them there best performance and I feel like the majority of them did," Sanchez said.
On Sunday the Cowgirls rode well and finished second. OSU wasedged out by Texas A&M who scored 22 points. The Cowgirls finished with 19.
Six Cowgirls won individually. In Open Reining A, Senior Kristin Dickerson won first-place. Freshman Rosalyn Johnson finished first in Intermediate II B. Kristen Thomas took home the first-place finish in Open Rail A. Luann Ulrich won for the second time in two days. The Fairview, Okla., native won both times in Advanced I A. Senior Emily Hoaglan finished second in Advanced I A.
The Cowgirls faired well in Beginner B. Sophomore Jessica Pruitt took home first place. Teammate Lindsey Welsh finished second. Freshman Stephanie Rollins rounded out the day with a win in Advanced II. The win was also her second in as many days.
"The team's performance was admirable. Overall the girls rode very well. There were some challenging horses in some of the classes and it was intended to be that way," said Sanchez.
In the overall points standing the Western team remains in third place. The Cowgirls have accumulated 91 points but still trail both Texas A&M and West Texas A&M who have 113 and 97 points respectively.
"You do not like to be behind ," said Sanchez "We have two more shows to turn this around. I wish I had a few more but that just means that we have to work harder to meet our goal."
The Cowgirls qualified two for regionals over the weekend. Natalie Hoefler and Mandy McNally both qualified joining April Peck, Emily Hoaglan and Luann Ulrich who have all already qualified earlier this year.
The Equestrian team will next be in action at home on Feb. 1-2 when the Hunt team will host two shows at the Animal Science Arena.
