TEMPE, Ariz. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team earned its first win of the Julie Goodenough era on Saturday evening, defeating Portland State, 68-51, in the consolation game at the ASU Holiday Classic.
The Cowgirls (1-4) were led offensively by senior guards Shelby Hutchens and Thia Willis, who led all scorers with 16 points apiece. Hutchens hit five of her seven shots from the floor and all six of her free-throw attempts, while Willis connected on 6-of-13 from the floor, including a 4-of-9 effort from beyond the three-point line.
Despite shooting 36.4 percent from the floor, the Cowgirls held a 32-20 lead at the intermission after holding the VIkings (2-2) to 35 percent in the stanza.
OSU heated up offensively in the second half, hitting 50 percent from the field, and put forth a stifling defensive effort that forced PSU into 34 turnovers and helped extend the lead to 22 points and with 7:17 remaining.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Dec. 7 with a 1 p.m. contest against Pepperdine in Stillwater.
