STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's cross country team finished second in the 14 team field at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.
The Cowgirls were second behind tenth ranked Georgetown and ahead of Adams State and Big 12 rival Kansas State.
Siri Alfheim was the top Cowgirl finisher with a time of 17:32 on the 5k course, which placed her third overall behind Amy Mortimer of Kansas State and Zoila Gomez of Adams State.
"I felt real good today. It was our first time to run this distance and we did real well. I know some of our girls were disappointed, but if we can get them up to their standards then we can run with anybody," Alfheim said.
Valentina Medina and Paula Gowings were the next two to finish for the Cowgirls. Medina finished eleventh and Gowing came in thirteenth with times of 18:04 and 18:06 respectively.
"This was good competition for us today. We were able to see how a national power runs a race. It was over when Alfheim was followed by four Hoyas from Georgetown. I know some of our girls are disappointed with their efforts today. Janine Brown normally runs third on the team, but she was not feeling well and finished sixth. This was also the first time we have run 5k this year and it will be even bigger when we run 6k at the Chili Pepper in two weeks," Head Coach Catrina Acosta said.
The Cowgirls have made a scheduling change and will next compete at the Chili Pepper in Fayetteville, Ark. Arkansas is another nationally ranked team and will pose strong competition, but Acosta said she is confident that they can beat them.
