Oklahoma City, Okla. -
Oklahoma State's Amanda Hayes drove in the winning run, scoring Danielle Thomas from second base as the Cowgirls defeated Kansas, 2-1, here Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament. The win pits OSU vs. Nebraska in the winners' bracket game at 5 p.m. at Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
Freshman Jade Lindly broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with a solo home run, her fourth of the season. The Jayhawks tied the game in the fifth on a solo shot by Christi Musser, her second hit of the game and fifth homer of the year.
Thomas led off the sixth with a bunt single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenny Kipp, who nearly beat out the throw. With one out, Hayes hit a grounder through the right side, scoring Thomas from second.
KU had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Megan Urquhart bunted a single to the pitcher, and went all the way to third when Lauren Bay overthrew first base. The Cowgirls intentionally walked Leah Tabb, and forced Courtney Wright to ground out. After an intentional pass to Musser to load the bases, Amy Hulse hit a grounder past third baseman Jenny Kipp. The ball glanced off Kipp's glove, directly into the glove of shortstop Casey O'Neill, who outran Tabb to the thirdbase bag.
Cowgirl hurler Lauren Bay threw a complete game, giving up five hits while striking out seven, improving her record to 14-10. OSU improved to 26-21 overall, and will play Nebraska at 5 p.m.
