Rhodes, Iowa - Oklahoma State's 10th-ranked golf team won the Big 12 Championships here Wednesday afternoon, led by senior Maria Bod?n's individual title won on the first hole of a three-person playoff.
The championship is the Cowgirls' second in three years. OSU also won the 1999 team title, led by Bod?n's individual championship.
Oklahoma State won by six strokes over second-place Texas, which was tied with OSU after the second round. Missouri, which led the tournament after two rounds, shot a 321 on the final day, dropping to fourth place behind Baylor. Nebraska rounded out the top-five teams.
"I am so proud of these girls," said OSU Head Coach Amy Weeks. "They played with a lot of poise and focus. For whatever reason, everything fell into place today. They finished extremely well."
Bod?n, who was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Year earlier in the day, had four birdies and four bogeys for an even-par round the final day. Only Lisa Meldrum of Oklahoma had a better round, shooting a 71 to enter a three-way tie for first.
Amelia Moses of Missouri, who had led the tournament after each of the first two days, shot a 75 to join Bod?n and Meldrum. Moses was the individual medalist at the 2000 conference championship, and Meldrum was named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Year on Wednesday morning.
Bod?n sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole of the playoff for the win. It was a straight putt that appeared to have stopped short but fell over the lip into the cup. Both Moses and Meldrum conceded short par putts.
"I like to feel the pressure to perform," said Bod?n. "I was playing with Amelia (Moses) and so I knew that we would probably go into a playoff. I always look to that as a challenge."
Bod?n was not without assistance, however, in winning the team title as all three of OSU's scorers shot a 75 or better during the final round, giving the Cowgirls the best round of the tournament at 295. Junior Emma Zackrisson finished with a 231 three-round total, good enough for sixth place, while sophomore Linda Wessberg shot a 233, tying three others for a seventh-place finish. Both earned all-tournament honors.
Wessberg was awarded another honor earlier in the day, earning her second-consecutive second-team All-Big 12 accolade. The Swedish native was the Newcomer of the Year last season.
The team championship is the 18th in the storied history of Cowgirl golf, the most league championships by any team in the conference. Coach Amy Weeks, in her first year as the Cowgirl head coach, has been a part of five of those, three as a player and two as a coach.
