Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma's seventh-ranked softball team had 15 hits en route to a 16-0, five-inning run rule of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls here Thursday afternoon. The loss was the worst defeat in school history in front of 887 fans, the largest crowd in Cowgirl Stadium history.
OU's Kelly Braitsch went 3-for-3 with four runs and five runs batted in, including a home run on the first pitch of the game. Lisa Carey went 3-for-5 for the Sooners with five RBIs as well, including two doubles.
Oklahoma starter Jennifer Stewart went four complete shutout innings, giving up two hits and walking three. Amanda Ratliff pitched the final inning.
After Braitsch's leadoff homer, it appeared that Oklahoma would score quite easily. But, Cowgirl starter Lauren Bay got out of the inning by striking out the final three batters. Bay also got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second before giving up eight runs in the third inning. The Sooners then scored two in the fourth and five more in the fifth for the final score.
Oklahoma improved to 35-7 overall and 10-2 in Big 12 play while Oklahoma State dropped to .500 at 20-20, including a 4-8 mark in conference games. OSU will host the Texas Longhorns on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
