COWGIRLS HOST TULSA, ARKANSAS Oklahoma State (19-16) will host both Arkansas and Tulsa in the 'Border War', Wednesday, April 11, beginning at 3 p.m. The first game will pit OSU vs. Arkansas at 3 p.m., followed by Arkansas-Tulsa at approximately 5 p.m. The Cowgirls will host Tulsa in the final game of the day at approximately 7 p.m. Oklahoma State is 13-3 all-time vs. Tulsa, and this will be the first-ever meeting between OSU and Arkansas.
COMING UP The Cowgirls will go on a four-game road swing through Iowa and Nebraska this weekend. OSU will play the Huskers on Saturday and Sunday, with games at 2 p.m. both days. ISU will host the Cowgirls in a doubleheader on Monday, starting at noon. Next Thursday, Oklahoma State will host the Oklahoma Sooners in the second bedlam game of the season. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT Missouri pitcher Stephanie Falk threw a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits as the Tigers defeated the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 4-0, Sunday afternoon. The Tigers struck early, scoring their first run of the game in the top of the first. Sara Vassmer led off with a single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Karen Williams. Vassmer took third on a wild pitch by Cowgirl starter Tiffany Paper and, with two outs, scored when Rachael McGinnis reached on an error by third baseman Jenny Kipp. Paper didn?t allow a runner past first base for the next three innings, before walking Lindsey Jacoby with one out in the fifth. McGinnis followed that up with a triple, scoring Jacoby. McGinnis then scored on a single by Melanie Fisher, making the score 3-0. The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh when Karen Williams led off with a slap hit that got through the left side and past both outfielders for a triple. She scored on a sacrifice fly by McGinnis, her second RBI of the game. OSU's only scoring threat came in the bottom of the first. With two outs, senior Amanda Hayes reached on a single, followed by a Ryan Realmuto walk. OSU got a runner on base in four other innings, but no Cowgirl got past first base the remainder of the game.
SCOUTING REPORT ON ARKANSAS Arkansas is 24-22 this season and 8-10 in the Southeastern Conference. The Lady ?Backs are led at the plate by Danica Howlett, who is batting .295 with 15 RBIs. The strength of Arkansas is pitching. The Lady ?Backs have a 1.28 earned run average with 13 shutouts. Heather Schlichtman leads the charge with a 17-10 record and a 1.17 ERA.
SCOUTING REPORT ON TULSA Tulsa is 10-23 overall this season and 3-7 on the road. The Golden Hurricane is led by senior Kari Curtis. The Stillwater native is batting .308 and is 10-of-17 on stolen-base attempts. Danielle Olsen leads the team in doubles (7) and runs batted in (13), while Ann Mesman leads the squad in home runs with five.
HEAD COACH SANDY FISCHER Sandy Fischer is in her 23rd season at the helm of the Oklahoma State Cowgirls, and enters Wednesday's game with a career record of 891-366-3. Her NCAA record is 843-350-3, making her the third-winningest active coach among NCAA coaches. She needs just six more victories to move into fourth place on the all-time victories list, past UCLA's Sharon Backus, who had 847 wins in her career. Coach Fischer has led OSU to nine conference championships, eight regional championships and nine Women's College World Series appearances. Under her guidance, 62 players have been named first-team all-conference, while 28 have gone on to earn All-America status.
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH MARGARET REBENAR In her 22nd year as the top assistant coach for Oklahoma State is Margaret Rebenar. Since her naming as the Associate Head Coach for the Cowgirls, Rebenar has accumulated a 323-158 record at Oklahoma State. Last season, she was inducted into the NFCA/ Easton ?300-win? club. Rebenar guided the Cowgirls to a regional championship and a College World Series appearance in 1998.
COWGIRL SOFTBALL ON THE AIR Beginning with the Kansas series, the remainder of Oklahoma State's home games, as well as the OU game in Norman, will be broadcast live on Stillwater Radio. Bill VanNess will provide the play-by-play for the third-consecutive season. Most games will be broadcast on 780 AM, with a few exceptions. Both OU games will be on 105.5 FM, as will the Missouri game on April 7 and the Tulsa game on April 11. All postseason games will also be aired on Stillwater Radio.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES Sophomore Lauren Bay leads the team in two-out RBIs with 11, followed by freshman Jade Lindly and senior Amanda Hayes, who each have eight ... Oklahoma State has scored 21 of its 98 runs this season in the first inning ... OSU has 48 multiple-hit games this season as a team, including a 4-for-4 performance by junior Angela Veronesi vs. Utah in the Red Desert Classic ... Freshman Jade Lindly leads the Cowgirls in pinch-hitting, going 2-for-3 this season ... The Cowgirls have 75 called strikeouts, or 38.5 percent of their total strikeouts ... Sophomore catcher Ryan Realmuto has thrown out 15-of-51 attempted base stealers, or 29.4 percent.
VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES In 26 games this season vs. non-conference opposition, Oklahoma State is 15-11. Three Cowgirls are batting .300 or better, with Amanda Hayes (.350), Lauren Bay (.321) and Calli Behmer (.310) hitting well. Five others are hitting .280 or better. Jenny Kipp has scored 18 of her 19 runs this season in non-conference games. Eighteen of Hayes' 20 RBIs this season have come vs. non-conference opponents. As a team, OSU is batting .275, is averaging 3.4 runs per game and just over seven hits per contest. On the mound, Bay has a 1.00 earned run average with a 6-4 record. She has 88 strikeouts in 69-2/3 innings, an average of 8.8 strikeouts per seven innings. The OSU pitching staff has thrown eight shutouts against non-conference foes, and has a 1.78 ERA.
BIG 12 RANKINGS Oklahoma State's pitching staff is second in the league in earned run average at 1.47, just 9/100th of a point behind Texas Tech, which leads the league with a 1.38 ERA. Cowgirl sophomore Lauren Bay leads the Big 12 in ERA, both overall (0.64) and conference-games only (0.14). She is second in the league in saves with two, and fourth with 132 strikeouts. Bay is fourth in the league with five shutouts, and she leads the league in inning pitched per outing at 6.30. She is second in the league in innings pitched in conference contests. Lauren is also third in opponent batting average (.164). Freshman Tiffany Paper is eighth in the league in ERA for conference-games only (1.75). Freshman Danielle Thomas and sophomore Stephanie Hodges are both sixth in the league in walks with 16.
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE In nine games at Cowgirl Stadium this season, Oklahoma State is 7-2. The Cowgirls have had some advantages both offensively and defensively this season in the friendly confines of the Stadium. Freshman Jade Lindly is batting .400 with four hits in 10 at-bats. Senior Amanda Hayes is batting .357, going 10-for-28 with seven RBIs. OSU has outscored its opponents, 24-10, at home this season. On the mound, sophomore Lauren Bay is 5-1 with a 0.16 earned run average and 40 strikeouts in 43 innings. The Cowgirl pitching staff has a 0.75 ERA at home with three shutouts. Since its opening last season, Oklahoma State is 11-5 at the new facility.
