Cowboys Hold Off Indians to Win Third Straight

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's baseball squad defeated the Southeast Missouri State Indians 10-7 on Thursday at Reynolds Stadium to claim its third consecutive victory.
The Cowboys (13-3) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, ending the Indians' streak of 27 consecutive scoreless innings. Back-to-back doubles by Paul Powell and Nebasett Brown got OSU on the board. Designated hitter Zach Cates singled home Brown before third baseman Rob Watson drove in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly.
OSU extended the lead to 5-0 in the second on Jos? Virgil's two-RBI single to leftfield, scoring first baseman Ali Modami and Brown.
Holding a 6-1 lead after three innings, Cowboy starter Josh Merrigan gave up a three-run home run to the Indians' Vern Hatton in the fourth inning to close the gap to 6-4. The OSU southpaw worked five innings and gave up four earned runs to move his record to 4-2 on the year.
OSU added three runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame, highlighted by a RBI double by Virgil and a run-scoring single by Cates to push the lead back to five.
Southeast Missouri State added a pair of runs in the ninth inning before OSU freshman Joe Weaver entered the game and retired the side to end the threat.
The Cowboys will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they host Princeton.
