LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State's baseball team scored 16 runs over seven innings as they run-ruled the Kansas Jayhawks 16-5 this afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
With the win, the Cowboys move to an 11-3 overall record and a 4-1 Big 12 conference record. Kansas falls to 7-5 and 1-4 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma State took a large lead early, scoring six runs in the second inning off of starter Dan Olson. Luke Scott led off the inning with a solo homer to right center. Zach Cates and Jimbo McAuliff hit back-to-back singles, scoring Rob Watson. Cates scored on a Ryan Budde sacrifice fly, and Nebasett Brown's triple scored Paul Powell and McAuliff. Brown then scored on a balk by reliever Sam Gish.
The Cowboys then added another six runs in the third inning as Scott lead off with a single and scored off of Cates' double to left center. Budde reached on an error by the third baseman, and McAuliff scored on the play. Toby Rhodes singled to right field, scoring Cates and Watson, and later came home on a wild pitch. Budde then scored the final run off the inning on Brown's sacrifice fly to the left fielder.
The Cowboys added two runs in both the fifth and the seventh innings to make the final score 16-5.
Nick McCurdy got the win for the Cowboys and moved to 3-1 on the season. He allowed only four runs, two earned, over six innings on the mound and struck out three Jayhawk batters. Dan Olson received the loss, dropping his record to 1-2.
Scott led the Cowboys offensively, going three for four with a solo home run. Rhodes was two for three with two RBIs. Brown was two for four with a triple, a double and four RBIs
Kansas was led by centerfielder Jason Appuhn who went two for two with an RBI and scored a run. Shortstop John Nelson was two for three and scored two of the Jayhawks' four runs.
Oklahoma State and Kansas will close out the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Hoglund Ballpark.
