LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State's baseball team held off a late rally by the Kansas Jayhawks to claim a 4-3 victory in the rubber game between the Big 12 rivals at Hoglund Ballpark on Monday.
The Cowboys, who improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in the Big 12, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs on back-to-back doubles by Paul Powell and Nebasett Brown followed by a RBI single courtesy of Luke Scott.
OSU extended the lead with a run in the fifth when Jos? Virgil scored on a single by Rob Watson.
The Jayhawks (7-6, 1-5) got on the board in the sixth, touching Cowboy starter Scott Baker for his only run in six innings of work.
Scott launched his third home run in four games in the Cowboy seventh to give OSU a 4-1 lead.
OSU reliever Shane Hawk worked a pair of scoreless innings before running into trouble in the ninth. The freshman lefthander surrendered two runs on two hits before stranding the tying run at first base to earn his second save of the season.
Baker picked up the win for the Cowboys, moving to 3-0 on the season, while Jake Wright (2-2) took the loss for KU.
OSU will open a 11-game homestand on Thursday when they host Southeast Missouri State at 3 p.m.
