STILLWATER, Okla. -
Oklahoma State is proud to announce its Class of 2001 that will be honored the evening of April 7 at the Center for International Trade and Development. A.L. Bennett, Jackie Goodman, Mike Gundy, Byron Houston, Jon Kolb and Frank Lewis will be inducted into the Hall of Honor for their outstanding athletic achievements while competing for Oklahoma State.
Bennett competed as a forward on Oklahoma A&M's 1946 team that made history by winning the school's second consecutive national championship, making the Aggies the first team to accomplish such a feat. Bennett was selected as an All-American in 1947 and 1948, making him one of only five Cowboys to be named twice. Also a member of the Missouri Valley's All-Conference Team during those two seasons, he is just one of 11 OSU players to be named all-conference more than once in his career.
One of the most decorated runners in Oklahoma State track history, Goodman competed for the Cowgirls from 1987-1990. During her OSU career, Goodman captured two NCAA Championships, winning the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run. Eleven times the standout harrier was selected as an All-American. Goodman holds both the indoor and the outdoor school records in the 5,000-meter run, turning in an outdoor time of 15:41.42 in 1989, which still stands as a conference record as well. Four of her 11 All-America honors came courtesy of the 5,000-meter run and others include being honored for the 3,000-meters in 1988 and the 10,000-meter in 1989.
Playing quarterback for OSU from 1986-89, Gundy led the Cowboys to two bowl games, the 1987 John Hancock Sun Bowl and the 1988 Sea World Holiday Bowl, both Cowboy victories. After throwing for 7,997 yards during his career, Gundy still stands as Oklahoma State's all-time leading passer and is the school's all-time leader in total offense as well. Gundy tossed 49 career touchdown passes, compiled a 58.3 completion percentage and completed 604 passes, all school records. Gundy set a NCAA record by completing 138 passes without an interception to start his career. Gundy is also the holder of nine conference records and was the Big Eight Newcomer of the Year in 1986.
Houston left Oklahoma State after a four-year career that saw him almost single-handedly rewrite the Cowboy record book. Houston is currently OSU's all-time leader in points (2,379), scoring average (18.7 ppg), rebounds (1,190), blocks (223), field goals attempted (1,501), free throws made (698) and free throws attempted (957). He is the only player to lead the Cowboys in rebounding four times. Houston earned All-America honors in 1992 and is one of only two Cowboys to earn all-conference honors three times. He was named the Big Eight Player of the Year in 1991 and was the Big Eight Tournament MVP in 1992.
A three-year letterwinner for the Cowboy football team, Kolb capped his OSU career by earning All-America honors in 1968 as a center. Kolb was also a two-time all-conference selection, earning the distinction in 1967 and 1968. Following his senior season, Kolb participated in the Senior Bowl, the North-South Shrine Bowl, the Coaches All-American Game and the College All-Star Game. After being selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by Pittsburgh, he competed for the Steelers from 1969-81. Kolb helped lead the Steelers to championships in Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV.
Lewis overcame a minor heart condition to post a career record of 45-5 and finished as a runner-up at the 1934 NCAA Tournament before winning a national title in the 155-pound weight class the following season. Lewis was a key member of the Aggie wrestling squads that won back-to-back NCAA titles in 1934 and 1935. Lewis won the 1935 national freestyle title and collected a gold watch as the first contestant recognized as outstanding wrestler. He went on to win four matches against one defeat in Berlin en route to claiming an Olympic Gold Medal in the 158.5-pound weight class. Lewis was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1979.
Each year Oklahoma State honors a "Team of Distinction" for its outstanding athletic achievements. In the wake of this year's tragic plane crash on Jan. 27, OSU will recognize the "Ten of Distinction" in remembrance of the ten individuals who were lost.
