STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State hurler Lauren Bay struck out eight batters in nine innings, but Texas Tech's Amanda Renfro threw a nine-inning shutout with 12 Ks as the Red Raiders defeated the Cowgirls, 1-0, here Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
Bay scattered nine hits, including two in each of the fourth and sixth innings. However, the one that proved the most costly was Sandy Butler's roller that forced shortstop Casey O'Neill deep into the hole and scored Britney Stolle from third with the winning run in the top of the ninth.
Oklahoma State had a chance to score a run in the fourth when catcher Ryan Realmuto led off with a double to deep right field. Bay followed that with a bunt single when Tech third baseman Andrea Joachims was uncertain of which base to throw to.
After a fly ball to shallow centerfield failed to score the runner from third, Angela Veronesi walked to load the bases. However, Renfro struck out the next two batters to end the threat.
Renfro finished with 12 strikeouts while giving up four hits and walking two. She improved her record to 19-9 on the season, while Bay dropped to 8-5. Bay went 2-for-4 at the plate, upping her batting average to a team-high .322. She also dropped her earned run average to a team-low 0.77.
Oklahoma State, now 17-11 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 play, will host the Red Raiders (22-11, 1-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
