FRESNO, Calif. - Oklahoma State's Equestrian team won the western half of the inaugural California Classic and placed third overall today in Fresno, Calif.
The tournament marked the first-ever competition between NCAA Division I schools with varsity equestrian programs. In order to compete, a school must already have a varsity equestrian team or be considering one in the future.
"This was a performance to be proud of," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "We were really excited about how everyone rode. The fact that Texas A&M won the overall show and we finished third shows how tough our region is."
Oklahoma State scored 23 points in the western show, finishing ahead of Ohio State (16), Cal Poly-SLO (16), Fresno State (15), and Texas A&M (14). In the hunt seat show, the Cowgirls scored 16 points, good enough for a fifth place finish.
Overall, Oklahoma State finished in third place, two points behind second place Fresno State, and three points behind champion Texas A&M.
The Cowgirls were led by Kate Hayes, who won her section of the advanced western horsemanship class. She was also named the overall western winner for the show.
Meghan Walentine won the reining class. Luann Ulrich placed second in intermediate western horsemanship, and Allysa Allen placed third in open horsemanship.
The Cowgirls will be back in action March 24 as they travel to Fort Collins, Colo. for the Zone 7 show.
