STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Cowgirl equestrian team won its first of three western shows this weekend at the Animal Science Arena.
Oklahoma State scored 17 points, three ahead of second place finisher Kansas State. Texas A&M and West Texas A&M tied for third place with 13 points each.
"I'm proud of the way our girls performed," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "We had some more girls qualify for regionals, and we gained a few points on regional leader West Texas A&M. I'm looking forward to the other two shows this weekend."
Megan Walentine led the Cowgirls, winning her section of open reining and placing second in open horsemanship. Walentine was also the high point rider for the show.
Chelsea Makloski won her section of open reining, and Erika Wint won her section of the intermediate II horsemanship class. Kate Hayes was the advanced I horsemanship champion, and Natalie Doss added a win in her section of intermediate II horsemanship.
Tracey Remshardt won the beginning walk trot class, and Luann Ulrich was the intermediate I horsemanship champion.
The Cowgirls will be back in action tomorrow as they host the second show of the weekend. The competition will begin at 8:30 a.m., and admission is free to the public.
