Cowgirls Open 2001 Season In The Lone Star State

Stillwater, Okla. - After a pair of doubleheader scrimmages, the Oklahoma State Cowgirl softball team is ready to compete in its first action of the regular season this weekend as OSU travels to Grand Prairie, Texas, to compete in the UTA/Isuzu InterCollegiate Classic. All games will be played at Mike Lewis and Cottonwood Parks.
Oklahoma State will open the tournament on Friday morning in a 9 a.m. contest with Stephen F. Austin. The Cowgirls will turn around and play Illinois-Chicago at 11:15 a.m., and take a few hours off before meeting Louisiana-Monroe at 3:45 p.m.
After pool play is completed on Friday, bracket play will begin on Saturday at 9 a.m., and conclude on Sunday with the championship game at noon.
The Cowgirls return 10 letterwinners and five starters to a team that finished 33-22 a year ago. Junior Jenny Kipp, a third baseman from Gilbert, Ariz., was an All-Midwest Region member a year ago. Along with Kipp, senior Amanda Hayes and sophomores Lauren Bay and Ryan Realmuto were all named to the All-Big 12 squad last season.
Oklahoma State finished 4-2 in last year's tournament, going 2-1 in pool play and winning the first two rounds of bracket play before being knocked out in the quarterfinals.
The Cowgirls are coached by Sandy Fischer, in her 23rd season at the helm of the softball program. Other members of the coaching staff are associate head coach Margaret Rebenar, assistant coach Kim Ward and graduate student assistant Sheryl Anderson.
