STILLWATER, Okla. -
Twenty members of the Oklahoma State Cowgirl equestrian team qualified for regionals today as the Cowgirls finished fourth in the third show of the weekend at the Animal Science Arena.
The twenty riders that qualified for Oklahoma State marked the most for any school in the region, as well as the most riders qualified in school history. The six other schools in the region combined to send 22 riders. Texas A&M qualified ten, West Texas A&M qualified seven, and Kansas State qualified five. Sul Ross, Tarleton, and Texas Tech did not have any riders who qualified for nationals.
"When you have a lot of talented individuals, it's hard to designate one rider who will score points for the team. We've pretty much been beating ourselves. We saw that throughout the year. We had almost as many girls qualify than the other schools combined," head coach Larry Sanchez said.
"Our girls are riding as well as they ever have. I'm excited to go to the regional, zone, and national shows with as many individuals as we can take. My goal is to take ten girls from OSU to nationals."
The top three riders in each of the five classes at the regional show will advance to the zone show, and the top two riders at the zone show will go to nationals.
In order to qualify for regionals in beginner, intermediate, or advanced horsemanship, a rider must score 35 points in her class over the course of 10 regular season shows. To advance to regionals in open horsemanship or reining, a rider must score 28 points in her class during the regular season.
In today's show, Texas A&M and Kansas State tied for first place, and West Texas A&M finished third. West Texas A&M also scored the most points in the region over the course of ten shows and will represent Zone 7, Region 2 at the national show.
The Cowgirls will be back in action in the hunt seat this weekend as they travel to Canyon, Texas for three hunt seat shows. The regional show will be held March 3 in College Station, Texas.
