BOCA RATON, Fla. - Oklahoma State's baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday in Boca Raton, Fla., defeating Boston College 14-8 before falling to Florida Atlantic 9-4 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Cowboys (5-1) outlasted the Eagles despite committing nine errors and stranding 16 runners.
OSU scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take a 6-4 lead. In the first, OSU leftfielder Jake Bollig got the scoring started, singling in a run and later scoring on a wild pitch to give the Cowboys the lead.
The Eagles (0-2) plated two runs in the fourth to tie the score at six apiece. In the top of the fifth, the Pokes took the lead for good, exploding for three runs.
The Cowboys extended their lead to 10-6 in the sixth with a single run before tacking on another three-spot in the seventh. In the seventh, third baseman Zach Cates doubled in a run, while catcher Ryan Budde followed with an RBI single. Second baseman Nebasett Brown drove home the last of his three RBIs in the game with a walk.
Freshman righthander Scott Baker tossed six innings and struck out six to move his record to 2-0 on the season.
Offensively, the Pokes were led by Brown's 3 RBIs, and shortstop Brian Kraft, who finished 2-for-3 with 3 runs scored.
Behind a strong pitching performance from righthander Danny Core, who struck out 11 over five innings, the Florida Atlantic Owls handed OSU its first loss of the season.
FAU tagged Cowboy starter Nick McCurdy for three runs in the first inning en route to sending the junior to his first loss of the season.
The two squads each scored a run in the third and OSU drew within 4-3 in the top of the fifth when senior Luke Scott cranked a two-run home run.
The Owls put the game out of reach in the bottom of the seventh when they scored four runs, giving them a six-run cushion.
