STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's softball team picked up three more wins Saturday, improving its fall record to a perfect 17-0 entering the final day of the fall season. The Cowgirls defeated Northwest Missouri State, 9-1, before dropping Nebraska-Kearney, 3-0, and Jacksonville State, 2-0.
In the first contest, OSU put an eight-spot on the board in the third inning en route to a 9-1, mercy-rule shortened game. The Cowgirls had seven of their 10 hits in the inning, including four extra-base raps. Junior shortstop Casey O'Neill had a two-run triple to highlight the inning.
In the second game, freshman hurler Tiffany Paper threw a complete-game shutout, her fourth of the fall season in seven starts, improving her record to 7-0.
OSU scored its first run in the bottom of the first on a two-out RBI single by Ryan Realmuto. The Cowgirls scored two more in the fifth, including one by freshman speedster Danielle Thomas. Thomas reached first after beating out a bunt single, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another miscue by the pitcher. Junior Paula Garman drove in Nikki Quiroz with a base hit to score the final run.
In the final contest, sophomore ace Lauren Bay threw a two-hit shutout, striking out eight for her sixth win of the fall. She dropped her team-leading earned run average to 0.22, and now has 37 strikeouts in 31-1/3 innings. Bay had a no-hitter entering the sixth inning.
The Cowgirls scored one run in each of the first and second innings, the first off an RBI double by Realmuto, her second two-bagger of the game. OSU scored its final run in the second on an RBI hit by Quiroz.
