OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.-- Oklahoma State's softball team picked up a 17-3 victory over Cameron University, propelling the Cowgirls to a 5-0 record and pool championship at the Oklahoma Shootout here Sunday afternoon at Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. With two victories Sunday, OSU improved its fall record to 8-0.
The Cowgirls got the scoring started early as they put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run single by Ryan Realmuto. OSU added five more in the second with six-consecutive hits to start the inning.
Cameron got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, scoring on a wild pitch, but it was too little, too late. Oklahoma State added runs in each of the third and fourth innings, and ahead, 12-3, scored five more in the sixth for the final tally.
On the mound, freshman Kara Wentworth scattered three hits while striking out six en route to the victory. Realmuto went 4-for-4 with three runs and four runs batted in.
In the earlier game, a pair of freshman hurlers shut down the CASC offense as Tiffany Paper and Wentworth combined for a two-hit shutout and a 9-0 win. Paper had seven strikeouts, while Wentworth had two.
OSU scored three in the first and added four in the fifth and two in the sixth to account for the nine runs. Shortstop Casey O'Neill went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs in the game.
Oklahoma State will host Butler County Community College in a tripleheader this Thursday, Sept. 21, starting at 5 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
