Boden To Compete In NCAA Women's Golf Championships

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State junior Maria Boden will compete in the NCAA women's golf championships, beginning Wednesday, May 24, at the Crosswater Golf Club in Sunriver, Ore. The four-day tournament will consist of four rounds of 18 holes, one played each day.
Boden qualified individually for the tournament after finishing third at the NCAA West Regionals two weeks ago in Tempe, Ariz., after the Cowgirls failed to qualify as a team. Boden will play as the top individual from the west region, and will tee off Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. pacific time.
The 19th annual event includes 24 teams that advanced from the two regional tournaments in addition to six individual qualifiers. The course is 6,502 yards and plays to a par of 72.
This will be Boden's third NCAA Championship appearance. She qualified as an individual in 1998 and finished tied for 34th. In 1999, Oklahoma State qualified as a team and Boden tied for 12th individually.

Maria has won three individual titles this season, and is currently ranked 15th in the country in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf rankings. She was named the Big 12 Conference's Golfer of the Year for a second-consecutive season, and earned a berth in the NCAA Championships by finishing third indivudually at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz. She led her team and the Big 12 Conference with a 73.52 strokes-per-round average.
Junior Season (1999-2000)
Fall 1999
Maria began her junior season much like her sophomore season ended. During four fall tournaments, she led the Cowgirls to two team titles at the Shootout at the Legends and the Roadrunner Invitational. She won two individual medals as well, picking up first place at the Big 12 Preview, where the Cowgirls finished second, and the Shootout at the Legends. She shot her first-ever collegiate sub-70 round with a 69 in the final round of the Big 12 Preview. She also shot three other sub-par rounds during the fall, and shot her best three-round score of 215 at the Legends.
Spring 2000 Maria was named the Big 12 Conference's Golfer of the Year for a second-consecutive season. She was also named to the All-Big 12 team for the third consecutive year and the Big 12 All-Tournament team for the second-straight time. Maria won three individual medals this season, earning the title at the Big 12 Fall Preview, the Shootout at the Legends and the Utah-Dixie Classic. She finished third at the NCAA West Regional, earning her a trip to the NCAA Championships. Maria shot a career-low round of 67 at the Utah-Dixie Classic which resulted in a career-low 212 for a three-round tournament. She shot 10 sub-par rounds during the course of the season. Maria led both the team and the Big 12 Conference in strokes-per-round average at 73.52.
Sophomore Season (1998-99)
Fall 1998
Maria appeared to avoid the sophomore slump as she led the team with a 74.21 strokes per round average. She finished first on the team in three of the five events, with her top finish being a third-place outing at the Dick McGuire Invitational and a tie for third at the Princeville Rainbow Wahine Intercollegiate.
Spring 1999
Maria had her best season to date as she won the UCLA Bruin Classic and capped off the season by winning the Big 12 Individual Championship in Boulder, Colo. For her efforts, Maria was named to the first-team All-Big 12 squad for the second consecutive year and was honored as the Big 12's Player of the Year. She went on to finish seventh at the NCAA West Regional Championships and 12th at the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Following the season, Maria was named a second-team NGCA All-American. She finished in the top 20 11 times, including six top-five finishes.
Freshman Season (1997-98)
Fall 1997
Maria made an immediate impact on the collegiate scene, tying for first at the Big 12 Fall Preview and finishing in the top 20 in three-of-four tournaments during the fall season. Maria was the top golfer during the fall, averaging 75.25 strokes per round with a low of 70 and a high of 79.
Spring 1998
Maria tied for first at the Preview Classic in Miami, Fla., her highest finish in the spring. She had three top-10 finishes in the spring, and qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing 13th at the NCAA West Regionals. As an individual at the NCAA Championships, Maria finished tied for 34th. She was named the Big 12 Conference's Newcomer of the Year, and was also selected to the All-Big 12 team. Maria won the 1997-98 OSU Student-Athlete Academic Achievement Award, and was also a member of the Big 12 Conference's All-Academic team. She was named the NCAA West District Freshman of the Year.
Non-collegiate
Maria attended Klippans Gymnasieskola, a Swedish golf high school. She has been a member of the Swedish golf team since 1994, and her lowest round as an amateur was a 68 at the European Ladies Championship in Paris this past summer. Maria was the 1998 and 1999 Swedish Junior Champion, won the SAS Invitational in 1999, finished second at the 1998 Telia Tour in Timra, and finished third at the 1998 European Junior Team Championship. She also finished fifth at the Europpean Ladies Team Championship in 1999. In the 1998 World Team Championship in Santiago, Chile, Maria?s team finished ninth, individually, she finished 20th. She won the Trygg Hansa Teen Tour in 1996, and has several runnerup finishes, including the 1995 Nordic Championship, the 1995 Italian Ladies Open Championship, and the 1997 TIMGT on the professional tour in Sweden. She shot a career-low 65 on her home course. Maria also competed in cross country skiing, soccer, basketball and bandy. She finished second in the Swedish Championship in bandy in 1993.
Personal
Born on Jan. 3, 1978, Maria is the daughter of Agneta and Hans Boden. Her mother played handball, while her father and brother, Anders, both played ice hockey. Maria is working on a bachelor's of university studies at Oklahoma State.
