Howell Takes Individual Lead Into Final Round Of The Maxwell

ARDMORE, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Charles Howell continued a hot streak Saturday, taking a two-stroke lead after two rounds of The Maxwell by Pontiac.
Howell carded a 4-under-par 66, one stroke shy of the tournament record, in the second round Saturday afternoon. That score, coupled with his even-par round of 70 Saturday morning in the first round, put him two strokes ahead of Texas' David Gossett and Mississippi State's Alex Rocha. Howell's most recent competition was the Big 12 Championship, when he cruised to medalist honors in record fashion.
Third-ranked Oklahoma State shot 22-over-par in the first 36 holes is tied for fifth in the team standings, six strokes behind second-round leader Houston in a tightly bunched group. Texas is one stroke behind the Cougars, with South Carolina and Mississippi State tied at 21-over.
OSU's Edward Loar joined Howell with an even-par first round and shot 74 in the second 18, putting him in eighth place with 18 holes to play. In their three years as teammates, Howell and Loar have finished in the top 10 on eight previous occasions, OSU has won four of those events.
Anders Hultman (31st at 9-over-par 149), J.C. DeLeon (53rd, 153) and Landry Mahan (70th, 159) joined Howell and Loar in the OSU lineup. Billy Lowry, competing as an individual, is 27th at 148.
The tournament, being played at Dornick Hills in Ardmore, concludes Sunday.
