VICTORIA, Texas - Oklahoma State carded a 5-under-par team round Friday to move into second place at the NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional.
The Cowboys are three strokes behind Northwestern, which shot 16-under as a team to take over the lead. The Cowboys are one of four Big 12 teams currently above the cut line -- the top nine teams at the regional advance to the NCAA Championship, which will be played May 31-June 3 in Opelika, Ala.
Charles Howell and Anders Hultman lead the way individually for the third-ranked Cowboys as the duo are tied for seventh place at 2-under individually. Northwestern's Josh Habig is the individual leader after a remarkable 63 on Friday left him at 6-under overall.
Landry Mahan continued his impressive regional play, carding his second straight even-par round to rank 13th at even for the event. J.C. DeLeon joined Mahan with a round of 71 on Friday and ranks 72nd overall at 7-over, Edward Loar's 73 has him at 5-over overall and in 45th place.
The Cowboys are aiming to extend their unprecedented 53-year streak of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. OSU's third-place position after one round at the regional is its best since the 1996 event, when the Cowboys eventually finished sixth.
The tournament concludes with an 18-hole round Saturday.
