ATLANTA, Ga. - Two members of Oklahoma State's Equestrian team were Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national champions and three others placed today as the Cowgirls are in first place after one day of western team competition at the IHSA national show in Atlanta, Ga.
The Cowgirls recorded 16 points after the first three of five classes, finishing the day four points ahead of second place Ohio State and Cal Poly-Pomona.
We are looking forward to tomorrow and the two more western classes, head coach Larry Sanchez said. The competition is so stiff that the points are distributed among the different schools. Things can change very quickly.
Kristen Thomas was the national champion in the team advanced western horsemanship competition, and Casie Cavanaugh was the national champion in beginning western horsemanship. Lara Phillips also placed fifth in the team reining competition.
In the individual western competition, Amy Eastty placed third in intermediate western horsemanship, and Allysa Allen finished fourth in the open western horsemanship class.
The show will continue tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. The western team competition will resume with the intermediate western horsemanship class and the open rail class. The hunt seat team competition will also continue tomorrow with the novice over fences class, the walk-trot class, and the open on the flat class.
