OKLAHOMA CITY - Oklahoma State's fifth-seeded softball team was eliminated from the 2000 Big 12 Softball Tournament 4-2 by the Missouri Tigers at Don E. Porter/ASA Hall of Fame Stadium today.
It was the second loss of the day for head coach Sandy Fischer's Cowgirls who fell to 32-22 on the season. OSU was defeated 3-2 in nine innings by Texas A&M in the opening game.
"When you get to this point, you have to play well and you can't have four errors - three his with four errors just isn't going to cut it," said head coach Sandy Fischer. "We have to give Missouri credit because they had some pretty good pitching. We just didn't make the plays."
The Cowgirls were hampered by four errors which lead to all four of Missouri's runs. OSU's Lauren Bay, who pitched both games, fell to 15-14 on the season giving up only one earned run in 16 innings of work. However, her earned run average fell to 1.88.
Missouri's Stacy Gemeinhardt led off the game with a single and managed to score when OSU's Jenny Kipp bobbled a ground ball.
The Tigers tacked on two more runs in the second inning when leftfielder Amanda Hayes uncorked a wild throw home as Christy Skouby scored. Missouri's Gemeinhardt singled for a second time scoring Karen Williams.
The Cowgirls put two runs on the board in the fifth inning to pull within 3-2. OSU's Paula Garman recorded the only hit of the inning for the Cowgirls. Both OSU runs came across the plate when Missouri's shortstop Dara Throneburg misplayed a ground ball.
The Tigers tacked on a unearned run in the seventh inning for the 4-2 win. Missouri's starting pitcher Stephanie Falk improved to 18-16 on the season.
The Cowgirls will now wait to learn their fate on Sunday evening when the NCAA announces the regional berths.
