First place at Big 12 Championship
Charles Howell shattered school and conference records while leading third-ranked Oklahoma State to the Big 12 Men's Golf Championship on Tuesday.
Howell carded a two-under-par 68 in Tuesday's final round to finish at 10-under 200 for the tournament, giving him the individual title by 10 strokes over teammate Edward Loar, whose even-par score of 210 would have ranked second in Big 12 history before Howell's onslaught.
OSU's team score of 851 is a Big 12 record, six strokes better than Kansas' winning card last season. The Cowboys also set Big 12 records for single-round scoring (272 in the second round) and score through two rounds (559).
Howell was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year by the conference office on Friday, and OSU's Mike Holder and CU's Mark Simpson were selected Big 12 Co-Coaches of the Year.
The Big 12 honors co-coaches of the year for the first time in its four-year history. Holder led Oklahoma State to its third Big 12 Conference Championship in four years with a tournament-record score of 851. The Cowboys have three tournament wins this year and have placed in the top five in all of their spring tournaments. OSU is ranked fourth in the country, according to the latest MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
The Cowboys return to action May 13-14 when they compete in The Maxwell by Pontiac in Ardmore, Okla.
