MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Kansas State scored eight runs in the first three innings to defeat Oklahoma State 15-9 in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Frank Myers Field.
OSU scored a run in the first inning before the Wildcats tied it in the bottom of the inning and then proceeded to take a 6-1 lead with five runs in the second, all unearned off of Cowboy starter Matt Smith.
After the Pokes added a run in the third to cut the lead to 6-2, the Wildcats knocked Smith out of the game in the third with two more runs extending the lead to 8-2.
Kansas State scored two more runs in the fourth and built a 10-3 lead before the Cowboys scored three in the fifth and two more in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-5.
Curt Anthony and Ryan Budde both hit solo homers to spark the OSU rally. The Wildcats shut down the comeback, however, scoring two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth to build a 15-8 lead and put the game out of reach.
Smith pitched 2.2 innings and gave up eight runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks to drop to 4-5 on the year. Freshman Mike Miller relieved Smith and pitched 3.1 innings of two-hit ball. He gave up three runs, one earned, and struck out three.
Kansas State starter Chad Duckers picked up the win to move to 3-3 on the year. He gave up seven runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out three.
Senior second baseman Lance Smith led the Cowboys at the plate with a 2-for-3 afternoon with a double and three RBIs.
The loss snapped OSU's five-game win streak and dropped the Pokes to 19-13 overall and 6-8 in the Big 12. Kansas State improved to 10-20 and 2-14 in conference action.
The teams will lock up in the rubber game Sunday at 1 p.m. Senior Frank Bludau is slated to get the start on the mound for OSU.
