No. 20 Softball Sweeps Kansas In Doubleheader

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Oklahoma State's 20th-ranked softball team took two games from the Kansas Jayhawks here this afternoon, sweeping KU and improving to 29-13 on the season. Kansas drops to 21-21.
OSU won the first game, 5-1, thanks to some fine pitching by freshman Lauren Bay (12-8). and 12 hits by the Oklahoma State offense. Bay went five complete innings, giving up just one hit while walking two and striking out seven. Annie Gunderson came on in relief and picked up her first save of the season.
After three scoreless innings, the Cowgirls put their first run on the board in the top of the fourth. Kirsty Jennings led off the inning with a double, and two hits later, Amy Campbell crossed the plate, running for Jennings.
OSU added three in the fifth when Jennings hit a two-out two-run homerun to the opposite field. Ryan Realmuto followed that with a base hit, and scored on an Amanda Hayes double to left center.
Kansas finally scored in the sixth when Shelly Musser scored on a double by Megan Urquhart. April Humphreys, running for Cowgirl Christina Shaddox, scored the fifth run for OSU in the seventh on a throwing error by the second baseman.
In the game, Jennings went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, and added two runs batted in to her team-leading 34 RBIs. Hayes went 4-for-4 and also collected two RBIs.
The second game was similar, with the same result as the Cowgirls picked up a 4-1 win. Four of Oklahoma State's seven hits went for extra bases.
The Jayhawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Shannon Stanwix led off with a solo homer off freshman Karla Rivera (10-3). The Cowgirl hurler scattered seven hits while walking two and striking out seven in the complete-game victory.
OSU scored three in the fourth, led by a solo homerun by Jenny Kipp, the first of her career. The Cowgirls added two more on back-to-back doubles by Jennings and Hayes. Oklahoma State added an insurance run in the fifth when Lezli Leathers, a former Jayhawk, hit a triple and scored on Kipp's single down the leftfield line.
Oklahoma State (29-13 overall, 6-3 in Big 12) will travel to Columbia, Mo., to face the Missouri Tigers (27-16, 3-4) in single-game action on Saturday and Sunday. Both games will start at 1 p.m.
