COLUMBIA, Mo. - Lauren Bay struck out a career-high 14 batters, but failed to pick up a win as the 20th-ranked Oklahoma State softball team lost to Missouri, 7-6, here Saturday afternoon in 11 innings. It was the Tigers' third straight win over OSU, dating back to last season.
MU took an early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run homerun by Erin Erickson, her fifith of the season. OSU tied the game in the second on a bases-loaded single by Shelly Graham, her only hit of the game.
After two scoreless innings, the Tigers again took the lead in the fourth. With runners on second and third and two out, Karen Williams hit a grounder to shortstop Casey O'Neill. O'Neill's throw pulled first baseman Christina Shaddox off the bag, allowing both runners to score and Mizzou to take a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Cowgirls scored two runs on a base hit by Amanda Hayes. With no outs and Hayes on third, MU hurler Stephanie Falk got the next three batters out on a strikeout, a popup and a fielder's choice to end the inning in a 4-4 tie.
After two scoreless extra innings and using the international tiebreaker rule of placing a runner on second base, Cowgirls Kirsty Jennings tripled in Jenny Kipp, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayes. Missouri responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the 10th, one on an RBI groundout, the other when Erickson scored from third on an error by Lezli Leathers.
With one out and the bases loaded in the 11th, Falk forced to Cowgirl groundouts to end the inning. The Tigers won the game in the bottom of the inning when Dara Throneburg scored from third on an error by Liz Silva.
Oklahoma State (29-14 overall, 6-4 in Big 12) will play Missouri (28-16, 4-4) on Sunday in a 1 p.m. game.
