OKLAHOMA CITY - On Sunday, April 16th, 2000, former University of Oklahoma (OU) and Oklahoma State University (OSU) athletes will participate in the first Bedlam Baseball Benefit to support local programs to help at-risk children. Some of the athletes and coaches scheduled to appear include Barry Switzer, Kelvin Sampson, Jimbo Elrod, and Steve and Tinker Owens from OU and Dick Soergel, Reggie Fish, Steve Hammond and Gary Lewis from OSU, to name a few.
Two of the programs that will benefit from this event are Positive Tomorrows and Sugar Creek Camp, both of which are committed to giving children hope and a chance for a better tomorrow.
Positive Tomorrows, a transitional school, provides education and social services to children of homeless families. This year alone, Positive Tomorrows will help transition over 400 kids, pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, into the regular classroom. "For many children, a stable home is something to dream about...many do not have any address or it changes all the time" said Susie Graves, Director, Positive Tomorrows. "Conditions that surround these children deter them from receiving the education they deserve. Some are fleeing or forced from abusive conditions and need a confidential location at which to study as well as a safer environment with immediate access to counseling and intervention. Positive Tomorrows provides just that," Graves said. In 2000, Positive Tomorrows celebrates its 10th anniversary.
Since 1984, Sugar Creek Camp has provided a quality camping experience at no charge to Oklahoma City's most disadvantaged children. Since its inception, a strong literacy program has been the cornerstone around which arts and crafts and traditional camping activities revolve. In addition, summer day camps and holiday camps take place. "Our camps offer a change from the grim and dangerous realities of the daily lives of these children to the beauty and peace of nature, sending them home with a ray of hope that their world can be better." Said Marcia Hunzicker, President, Sugar Creek Camp.
The Bedlam Baseball Benefit will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 16th, 2000, at the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark in downtown Oklahoma City.
There will also be all kinds of entertainment for families to enjoy such as a batting contest, potato sack race and a treasure hunt. In addition, an autograph session featuring OU and OSU alumni athletes will be held between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Admission is $5.00 and tickets are available at all OK Ticket Outlets, the Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark or by calling 405-948-6800.
