STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State pitcher Lauren Bay gave up just two hits while Jenny Kipp and Amanda Hayes hit back-to-back homers as the Cowgirls' 23rd-ranked softball team defeated Texas A&M, 3-0, here Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.
Bay picked up her 15th win of the season while also throwing her fifth complete-game shutout of the year. She walked five and struck out four Aggie batters in the game. Her 15 wins in a single season are the most by a true freshman since Dena Carter won 18 games in 1988.
Both pitchers had a no-hitter going into the fourth inning, when A&M's Tiffany Esters doubled in the top of the inning. The Aggies had the bases loaded without a hit in the third, but Bay struck out Stephanie Collins to end the inning.
OSU got its first hit of the game in the fifth, when Lezli Leathers reached on a bunt single, but was caught stealing second to end the inning. With one out in the sixth, Shelly Graham hit a line shot to left field that was misplayed by Hollee Hayden and went to the fence, a standup triple.
Kipp followed with a two-run blast over the left-centerfield fence, her third round-tripper of the season. Not to be outdone, Hayes hit her third homer of the season, a solo shot, over the centerfield wall.
Oklahoma State (33-19 overall, 8-9 in Big 12) will host the Aggies (27-19, 6-9) on Sunday in the second game of the series at 1 p.m. It will also be Senior Day, with five seniors being honored prior to the contest.
