STILLWATER, Okla. - After a 30-minute ceremony officially opening Oklahoma State's new softball facility, the Cowgirls put an exclamation point on the festivities, picking up a 4-2 win over the Nebraska Huskers here Saturday afternoon.
It was the fourth game to be played on the new field, but the overall atmosphere with dignitaries such as OSU President Dr. Halligan, Stillwater mayor Mike Henson, and former Board of Regent member Jack Givens on hand gave the stadium an official feel. Pauline Winter, the first softball coach in OSU history when the program began in 1975, threw out the first pitch.
Once the game got started, it was all business as freshman hurler Lauren Bay mowed through the first seven Husker batters, including three strikeouts. She finished with seven K's in the game.
Oklahoma State scored three of its runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a misplayed ball by Husker shortstop Amanda Buchholz. With the bases loaded, Cowgirl Christina Shaddox hit a grounder to short. Buchholz bobbled the ball, and when she threw home, threw the ball away, allowing two runners to score. OSU scored its third run of the inning on an RBI single by Liz Silva.
The Cowgirls added a run in the fourth when Casey O'Neill scored from second on a hit through the left side by Shelly Graham. Nebraska scored two in the top of the fifth, the first on a bases-loaded walk by Leigh Suhr, and the second on a sacrifice fly that was caught in foul territory by Cowgirl second-baseman Lezli Leathers. Bay struck out the final two batters to end the inning and retired the final eight batters to end the game.
Oklahoma State (32-15 overall, 7-5 in Big 12 games), ranked 22nd in the NFCA Coaches' Poll, will host the Huskers (32-18, 7-2) on Sunday at noon in the final game of the series.
