STILLWATER, Okla. - Nebraska's Leigh Ann Walker held the Oklahoma State offense to just three hits, and the Nebraska bats led the way as the Huskers defeated the Cowgirls, 12-1, here Sunday afternoon in Big 12 Conference softball action.
OSU senior Shelly Graham picked up two of OSU's hits. It was a groundout by Paula Garman, however, that pushed the Cowgirls' only run across the plate.
It was double-trouble for OSU all day long, as Walker limited Oklahoma State to just three hits while walking just one and striking out nine. She struck out as many as six in a row in the second and third innings.
NU scored one run in the first when Lezli Leathers misplayed a grounder by Amber Burgess that would have been the third out. Kim Ogee scored from second on the play, putting a run on the scoreboard for Nebraska.
Things were quiet for 2-1/2 innings before the Huskers added a run in the fourth when Burgess scored on a bloop single by Jenifer Williams. However, Nebraska broke it wide open in the fifth, scoring five runs on just two hits, two walks and three Cowgirl errors.
Oklahoma State scored its only run of the game in the fifth, when Nicci Quiroz, pinch running for Christina Shaddox, scored on a groundout by Garman. Shaddox had led off with a walk, and Quiroz went to third on a double by Ryan Realmuto.
NU added five more runs in the sixth, including five off of reliever Stephanie Hodges. Hodges pitched one-third of an inning, giving up four hits and two walks. Graham got to third in the bottom of the inning, but was stranded and the mercy-rule was put into effect.
Oklahoma State (32-16 overall, 7-6 in Big 12 play) will return to action on Wednesday, April 19, as the Cowgirls travel to Norman, Okla., to face the sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
