COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Oklahoma State freshman hurler Karla Rivera threw a three-hit shutout, and the 21st-ranked Cowgirl softball team defeated No. 20 DePaul, 7-0, here Friday afternoon in pool play at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Rivera scattered three hits and three walks while striking out five Blue Demons. Meanwhile, at the plate, the Cowgirls were on fire, racking up 11 hits, including two each by Amanda Hayes, Jenny Kipp and Kirsty Jennings.
Oklahoma State scored five runs in the bottom fourth with six consecutive base hits. Senior Christina Shaddox was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and after Shelly Graham grounded into a fielders' choice, Ryan Realmuto also singled.
Lezli Leathers grounded into a fielders' choice, and with two outs, Casey O'Neill, Hayes, Kipp, Jennings, Liz Silva and Shaddox each hit singles, scoring five runs.
Rivera improved her record to 6-0 on the season, and recorded her third shutout of the year.
Oklahoma State's game with fourth-ranked Arizona State was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain with the Sun Devils owning a 10-0 lead. Play will be resumed Saturday morning. The Cowgirls will play No. 16 Alabama Saturday afternoon before bracket play begins Saturday night.
