COLUMBUS, Ga. - After two tough losses to top-20 teams, the Oklahoma State Cowgirl softball squad defeated Massachusetts, 11-2, Saturday in the first round of bracket play here in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
OSU won its first game Friday night, 7-0, over 20th-ranked DePaul. The Cowgirls were trailing, 10-0, to No. 4 Arizona State when the game was suspended due to rain late Friday night.
Saturday morning, the Cowgirls lost to 16th-ranked Alabama, 6-1, and then concluded the ASU game with a 10-0 final. With a 1-2 record, the Cowgirls were placed in the Bronze bracket.
Versus No. 28 UMass, the Cowgirl batting was spectacular, clubbing out 17 hits off three Minutewomen hurlers. Junior Lezli Leathers went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, while freshman Ryan Realmuto and sophomores Casey O'Neill and Jenny Kipp each belted three hits.
On the mound, freshman Karla Rivera started the game, but was relieved in the third by freshman Lauren Bay. Bay proceeded to strike out eight UMass batters, and picked up the win.
Oklahoma State (15-6) will play No. 17 Illinois-Chicago on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. EST.
