LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's Amanda Renfro threw a complete-game shutout, limiting the Cowgirls to just four hits as the Red Raiders defeated 18th-ranked Oklahoma State, 5-0, here Saturday afternoon in the softball conference opener for both schools.
Renfro scattered four hits while walking three and striking out one. Meanwhile, OSU's pitchers were not as fortunate, as freshman Lauren Bay gave up three runs, all earned, on just two hits and five walks. She also struck out five batters in 4-2/3 innings.
It was 12-up, 12-down as the first two innings flew by for both teams. Cowgirl sophomore Paula Garman started the offense with a bunt single to lead off the third, but was stranded on second after moving over on a sacrifice bunt.
Texas Tech led off the third with a walk, which was quickly erased as Tamara Harrington grounded into a 3-6-4 double play. Eva Harshman singled, and with back-to-back walks, the bases were loaded. Amanda Douglas drove in two runs on a base hit to right field, and another run scored on two more walks, the second with the bases loaded. Tech led, 3-0.
The Red Raiders added two more runs in the fifth when Sandy Butler reached on an error, and two runs scored on back-to-back doubles by Douglas and Paula Workman, giving TTU the 5-0 win.
For OSU, Garman was the only Cowgirl with two hits, going 2-for-3. Douglas went 2-for-3 with a run scored and 3 runs batted in for Tech. Renfro improved her record to 9-13, while Bay dropped to 8-7.
The Cowgirls (23-11 overall, 0-1 Big 12) will play the Red Raiders (12-24, 1-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home to Stillwater.
